Soundlab m-2px compared to the 1's ?

Ohjoy -- Mon, 09/13/2010 - 12:32

Hello all
Anyone with experience in the differences between the Soundlab m-2px and the m-1px ?  Im sure the low bass extension is one but i will be putting together a system in a small room, hopefully early next year and am a huge Soundlab fan.  I think i have to at least try them lol.  But the 1's I know are just going to be just to darn big.  So Im hoping i can live with the differences between the two.  Midrange ? top end ?
Appreciate the input,
hense the soundlab photo of a nice system lol (not mine I wish lol)
Happy listening
Kevin

Ohjoy,

Welcome to the club of owners of the best speaker on earth!

What's your room size?  Do you have any room treatments?

Ohjoy -- Mon, 09/13/2010 - 21:30

Well the room is not a sound room yet its still a quest room.  I am waiting for some funding for early next year that should get me going.  The room is 12 by 10 so its small, so its going to be tough to setup soundlabs but im thinking maybe just maybe the 2's might work, wishfull thinking maybe lol. I just have to have a pair in my life time lol.  Living room is just not going to be allowed, and I dont think were going anywhere soon lol. I wont get into treatment till i finalize what Im going with.  So do you have experience with m-2px's ?
I should probably do a near field setup, that would be fun to.

Ohjoy,

I was in a very similar position as you when I picked up my A1's. (A1's are virtually the same as M1's.) I was planning to put them in a 14x16 room, but ended up plopping them in my huge living room, from which they never moved. (I get an occasional complaint from my wife, but they are still in the living room. I must be doing something right.)

I did a lot of research prior to pulling the trigger on the A-1's. I talked to a lot of people, checked out the soundlab owners site, talked to the SL factory, and consulted acoustic experts. I came to the conclusion that you want the biggest speaker you can afford. The Soundlabs can work in smaller rooms much better than other big speakers such as Maggies due to their radiation patterns. The bigger the panel, the better. M2's are also quite huge - they are only 5-7 inches smaller than M1's length and width-wise. Either way, you will have to tame your room with a lot of bass panels. But the nuance and the inner detail that the bigger panel produces is worth every penny. I only wish my ceileings were tall enough to accommodate the big Majestics. Also, the bigger speakers are more efficient, and will offer a larger choice of amps.

I know this was not the answer you were looking for. You can try posing the same question on the soundlab owners site. However, other than cost, I see no advantages to the M2 over M1. Bottom line is that if you can afford it, get the bigger speaker.

Thanks appreciate the advice. Your a lucky man having the A1's and a wife that will allow you to have them lol.

 Kevin,

In your room M-2PXs will work fine, and in fact M-3PXs might also do a nice job. Years ago I sold a pair of U-2s (same size panels as M-3s) to someone with a room almost identical in size, and they worked very well. There will be differences in bass extension and fullness, and the M-2PXs will work well in rooms up to about twice the size or so. Positioning "size 1" Sound Labs in a room your size would be tricky.

You might want to go hear a pair, because there's nothing quite like wrapping your ears around some speakers you might hope will be your last. There's a list of Sound Lab dealers on the Sound Lab website. I'm the dealer in the Chicago area, also serving most of the midwest. Please feel free to call if you have other questions.

Incidentally, the photo you use as your avatar is of one of my clients' systems.

lol thank you for the information very much appreciated.  I responded to this guys system and think its one of the nicest Soundlab setups Ive seen, really nice job Brian.  Just saw a post of a pair of M-1's for a nice price its very tempting lol but will hold off.  There is one soundlab dealer here in San Diego but its setup in a surround sound system, driven by some low end solid state gear, with a big TV in the middle lol.  Hard to get an idea what there going to sound like.  Guess when Im ready I'll just have to give it a try.
Thanks again Brain
