Hello Everyone!
I've been looking into the Smyth Realiser A8, a new processor which has gotten raves on home theatre forums for its ability to emulate a multi-speaker, ultra high end system through a single pair of Stax headphones. However most of the reviews are from folks who use this system to view and listen to blue ray discs of movies, rather than audiophiles such as myself.
The product is very intriguing. The claim is that using a profile generated in a top tier listening space with a very expensive speaker setup, one can replicate the auditory experience through the Smyth processor. I am very interested in hearing from audiophiles who have tried this product. While I understand that such a system might be able to do a great job with the emulation of distance cues from multiple speakers, I am having trouble conceptualizing how listening through a $700 pair of headphones could duplicate the more subtle characteristics of, say, a $100,000 top of the line speaker. There must be other qualities this ultra expensive transducer has that the Stax don't have. Or must there? What am I missing? I'd love to learn that this system is as desirable for a listener of orchestral and chamber music and jazz as it is for someone wanting a great home theatre emulation. I am considering getting better speakers. My current ones are Thiel 1.6. But going to the next level will be much more expensive than the $3600 for the Realiser, and my room is very small. So if this works....
The first reviews of the Realiser are in and they are *most* promising. Enjoy the Music (and now Stereophile) are reporting that the Smyth is damn-near the equal of their reviewer's expensive rigs. And the folks that reviewed the Smyth are experienced in surround music, no less !!
I have not heard the Smyth - but it really seems to perform as advertised. The perspective listener (apparently) needs help with the bass - in the form of a chair "shaker" or near-by subwoofer. Seems achievable.
The big question is if a better amp-speaker combo could improve things even more. Would Stax's top amp and 'phones be better ? It would seem so.
The Smyth Realiser could very well change the way audiophiles listen to music.........
