I have a small room 10'5" squared. Can I use small bookshelf speakers with stands and get good sound out of this room? my components are SA8260 marantz sacd player, pass lab X-150 amp and GFP-750 gold badge preamp. Cables are; interconnects creative cable concepts, harmonic technology mk-III. Speaker cable is also harmonic technology. Top gun power block for conditioning. So in the $500 to $1000 range for bookshelf speakers (and stands) and these components plus this 10'5" squared room what speaker would match up well? By the way, Robert Harley's book, The Complete Guide To High End Audio changed my life! I thought I was an audiophile/music lover but after reading Robert's book made me realize I had a lot to learn! Thanks Robert. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Kevin
Kevin,
I'm in a small room, not quite a square but pretty close. I get great sound and one of the reasons is because I don't "overspeaker" the room. Two-way stand mounts work great and if I really want significant bass reinforcement a great small sub from a company like Definitive Tech or REL turns the trick. As long as you have the flexibitlity to play with placement, i.e. pull the speakers out from the walls, perhaps a little acoustic treatment at the first reflection point on the sidewall and you'll be able to attain a system of even tonal balance, wonderful detail and soundstage and never suffer from lack of dynamics. A couple of previews. Issue 195 will be TAS' Editor's Choice and will summarize the Best that's available. Issue 196 is TAS' Loudspeaker Edition and will have at least four new loudspeakers in your category from Epos, B&W, Rega and Acoustic Energy.
In the here and now I would be remiss if I didn't suggest you have a listen to the Focal 705V & 706V compacts as well the PSB Imagine B and the B&W CM1. Great small speakers all.
