Server incorrectly flagging posts as spam?

default -- Wed, 01/06/2010 - 09:14

Apologies for this post, but I have been trying to contact the webmaster for days with no response. The server lets me post to the 'Magico Q5' thread but not 'Anyone successfully go from stats/ planars to box speakers' anymore although it did two days ago, even with simple questions like 'What did you replace your speakers with' plus numerous others I have tried. it also captures my IP address incorrectly, as well as the user id. Previewing the same posts doesn't flag anything. Anyone else having similar problems? Here's hoping that someone from AVGuide is reading this.

And the server fails to show the userid of the very first post - this is Eclipse penning above.

admin -- Wed, 01/06/2010 - 14:16

When starting a new forum topic, only user names of registered users are shown.  Comments on an existing forum topic can be anonymous, and in cases where a user is not logged in they are allowed to enter a name to be associated with the comment.  We recommend you register with the site since the spam filter is more sensitive in processing comments made by anonymous posters.

We have turned down the sensitivity on the spam filter overall, in any case, so please try again, and let us know if you continue having trouble posting in the forums.

firedog -- Thu, 01/07/2010 - 08:19

I made several comments when logged in, and all were caught as spam

hynek001 -- Sat, 02/20/2010 - 18:25

My posts also are being rejected by the spam filter - very frustrating.

jtein -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 01:02

Yes, I also experienced the same thing when I was trying to post in my own thread as a registered user. And people like Ricardo Messeri who berates and ridicules any other product except Magico does not get flagged as spam.

prepress -- Fri, 02/26/2010 - 11:00

I also have had this happen, including on a thread I started. Yesterday was good, though. I posted twice (two different threads) with no problem.

Suteetat -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 04:24

Ditto, I also got spam filter rejection a few times when posting as a log in user. Most recently yesterday :(

Cemil Gandur -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 05:58

Same here - getting frequently rejected, even though I am logged in.
Good to try filter out all the spam, but I think the system is presently throwing the baby out with the bathwater :)

Eclipse (not verified) -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 09:15

Keeps happening to me again - it's not worth spending too much time to respond anymore

SundayNiagara -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 09:39

This happened to me several times, but the admin took care of it.

Suteetat -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 10:05

The few times that it happened to me, I reported the problem but my post never showed up and I could not be bother typing them all again (not that I have anything earth shattering or vital to add!) :)

danielaparker -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 10:40

It's happened to me about six times.  I filled the "this is not spam" form for all of them, and two of them got posted later (much later in one case), and an additional two were quoted from in responses from avguide.  It takes time to draft a response, and it's irritating to have it vanish in smoke.  This is the only audiophile group where I've experienced this.  It's also the audiophile group with perhaps the lowest response rate from users, perhaps the two are related.

We'll have Rob and team check into it.

Thanks.

bherlihy -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 11:23

this has happened to me several times (last five times in fact) and i report it each time but there is not a follow up.  i am registered and GEC so i don't think it is a registration problem.

bherlihy -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 11:23

coincidene (or irony) it didn't happen that time

Rob Grady -- Sun, 02/21/2010 - 16:12

 Hey Folks,
It looks like our Spam Filter has been a bit over active. We're working on it and will be monitoring it regularly. Thanks for you patience.

DH -- Fri, 02/26/2010 - 08:28

The filter rejects every post of mine- except here, ironically. I even made a second logon and it didn't help. I usually only post in order to help others. Please fix this. it's very frustrating to write a post and then have it get rejected

Rob Grady -- Fri, 02/26/2010 - 08:40

Hi DH, I'll look into it right away.

DH -- Fri, 02/26/2010 - 08:55

I also post as user firedog. thanks

bosell -- Wed, 03/10/2010 - 13:28

I cannot post anymore to a thread that I started and had previously posted to several times. Getting things like this to work should not be rocket science these days...

Rob Grady -- Wed, 03/10/2010 - 15:58

Sorry for the problem and thanks for your patience, I'm currently looking into it.

firedog -- Wed, 03/10/2010 - 17:31

The filter did it to me again today

I face the same problem - in a post I initiated, where I make some negative comments about Steve Stone's understanding of how a PC based audio system works... (hard drives and RAM and USB cables do not make a difference) I wrote to the web master, to no avail. Am I being banned?

Steven Stone -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 10:05

When you post the same message multiple times the site thinks you're a SPAM BOT and blocks you.

For such a computer whizz your knowledge of how websites work is rather limited, eh?

firedog -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 10:50

Steven-

What some of you at avguide.com may not realize is that the spam bot often blocks us on the first and only attempt to post. A couple of weeks ago the forum regularly blocked about 90% of my attempts to post. I'm not talking about double posts. The spam filter also blocks submissions when you are logged in and decide to edit one of your existing posts. This shouldn't happen at all.

It's very frustrating when one has put in the time to give a thoughtful reply to a forum member to see the post rejected. I participate in several forums at various sites, and only have this type of problem at this forum. Apparently others are experiencing something similar. I think this means the forum spam filter isn't very good, or isn't configured properly.

Eclipse (not verified) -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 11:41

No one is posting anything more than once. It should be obvious that people are simply complaining about their original post from being flagged.

Rob Grady -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 11:52

 Hi Firedog,
We're currently working on this issue and unfortunately the spam filter has been overactive. We're actively looking into different options to resolve this.

SundayNiagara -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 16:53

Switch to Vbulletin software!

Rob Grady -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 17:30

Hi SundayNiagra,

We're probably not ready to switch forum software yet but we've had a lot of success with Disqus on WindingRoad.com and in some testing. Thanks for the suggestion!

SundayNiagara -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 22:54

And, make people register before they can post!

Rob Grady -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 22:53

Indeed. Actually that solution is on the short list and we're working on rolling that out.

Steven Stone -- Thu, 03/11/2010 - 23:08

I would love to see registration prior to posting.

bosell -- Tue, 03/23/2010 - 18:26

Well, I am spam again! I wonder what is NOT spam according to your setup...<sigh>

Rob Grady -- Tue, 03/23/2010 - 19:10

Can you tell me what you were posting?

bosell -- Tue, 03/23/2010 - 19:54

It got posted -twice- in the Magico Q5 thread.

http://www.avguide.com/forums/magico-q5

Suteetat -- Thu, 03/25/2010 - 18:51

hmmmm, after having no problem with spam filters for a couple of months, now I got filtered twice in a roll in a thread regarding MSB Platinum vs Berkeley which I posted in before. Go figure. I reported to webmaster yesterday after the first filter block. Nothing happened and I tried to post again today and got filtered again.
This site has to be the most unfriendly site for a registered logger to post. I suggest getting rid off the filter or turn it way down and webmaster just have to be a bit more deligent about manually removing spam, I thihk.

Apparently, under RH's blog on the most expensive speakers, the most common word for "fec-trickfilter-es" is allowed by the spam filters. Perhaps it's because it reflects on the web site's foundations???
