Separating 2-CH from HT system

-- Fri, 02/27/2009 - 05:53

I want to separate my 2-channel experience from my HT setup and I've recently begun that project. But first, here is a list of what I have at present:
Yamaha HTR-6190B Receiver, Revolver Rebel Red TT with Grado Reference Platinum MM (Moving Iron actually) cartridge, Tonar Vinyline 4189 Phono preamp, PS3 for BD/DVD/CD playback,Totem Sttaf (fronts), Totem Mite-T (centre) and Totem Mite (rears)
My first upgrade is a new MARANTZ TT-15S1 turntable with Clearaudio Virtuoso MM Cartridge (waiting for its arrival from my dealer). My question is this? Should I invest in a better Phono Preamp and make that my next upgrade or look into a 2-Channel Power Amp? I have an extensive vinyl collection (several thousand) and it is my primary source for music listening.
The strongest parts of my gear so far are the Totem speakers and I must admit, I really like them. So, if you have a suggestion regarding amplification, what would be a good match? I listen primarily to Progressive Rock, blues, jazz and female voices with the occasional classical selection.
Thank you so much in advance for any advice and/or opinion.
John

I would look into a high quality 2 channel integrated amplifier or separate 2 channel preamp and power amp combination. Most now have home theater bypass mode or unity gain mode. Take the L and R pre-outs from your Yamaha into the input on your integrated amp or preamp. I know Totem has often used Plinius for its demos at show. One of the Naim integrated amps, like the new Naim XS with a separate Naim stageline phono preamp might also be nice.

I agree with "tikkenator" that you should upgrade your amplification. The Naim Nait 5i is a good choice. Although I don't know anything about the Tonar Vinyline, you should absolutely invest in a great phonostage given your LP collection and listening habits. The Totems are the best part of your system, and will benefit from being driven with a higher-quality signal.
