In search of control.......

Hello. I am new to this forum and any help (from anyone) would be greatly appreciated. I am building a 5.1 system and in search of a preamp. I would really like something that has assignable audio outputs (ie. Parasound Halo C2) so that I have the capability of bi-amping my front 2 for stereo listening. Any one know of such a capable unit? I would love to hear from some C2 owners. I view it as a very fine piece of equipment but I am having issue with the fact that it does not offer video up-conversion. I feel that at this price point it's essential. Any thoughts/suggestions?

Are you sure video upconversion will help?

I think it will. I know it's convenience feature, but in my head there are certain things (including a level of convenience) that go without saying once you break past the entry level. Do you currently use a C2 or a preamp that does not offer up-conversion? If so, how much of a hassle is it switching video sources through the display? There are several on the market that I have in mind at my price point but non offer the assignable audio outputs that I like so much on the Parasound model.

Thanks again for your input.....

I run my DVD player video straight into my projector. There is no doubt that it is a small hassle to have to switch the controller and then the projector separately.

By your statement I assume that you are using DVI or HDMI to connect your DVD player to your projector....and based on that assumption am I to assume as well that you have a receiver/processor that does not support one of these digital connections? If that's the case it's very logical for you to do it in that manner (to take full advantage of the resolution capabilities of your DVD player and/or projector). My display (an older HD monitor) only supports the analog component video connections, so there is no advantage of a direct connection between player and display right?

I'm using both component and DVI inputs, but mostly because I've never had a processor that was up to date as far as video switching goes, and I got used to seperately switching video and audio. With component video I assume there is no downside to switching via the controller, though logically the switching circuit has to have enough bandwidth and be low noise.

It may not be concidered as high end as a Halo, but it seems like the Yamaha RX-V2700 will do what you want, including bi-amping as well as HDMI up-conversion.
You might even find some features you like that you weren't even looking for. I love the fact that I can stream all the music from multiple PC's around the house, as well as listen to around 2K internet radio stations from all over the world. You can go to Yamahas website to look at all the features.

Just my $.02
