Samsung speakers with 7.1 Onkyo tx-sr605

I am a total newbie in this electronic world and just started researching about home theaters. I badly need help from experts.

I want a startup home theater system and I am decided on the onkyo receiver because of its hdmi inputs and reasonable cost. However while researching for speakers I find that the ones I like are not within my budget. I also read in one of the google articles that If you buy a good AV receiver, you dont have to invest in expensive speakers and vice versa.
Is that true?

I came across Samsung HT-X50 home theater with 5 disc dvd/cd changer.(no hdmi inputs, one output.). It costs 199$ at CC. Can I use these speakers to connect to the onkyo receiver and then the 5 disc dvd/cd player into one of the onkyos' HDMI inputs.? Will the speakers give good sound? The onkyo is 90Watts per channel.

If you think the samsung speakers are no good.I would appreciate it if someone can recommned a good 5 speaker sys :) tem to go with this model.

Hi.

I have a Pioneer VSX-AX10Ai-G bought in Singapore 2004 at the same time I was searching for good speakers and I tested alot of speakers with same DVD player and same AMP and same DVD concert. After all testing I decided to go with the Canadian Brand MIRAGE and it have been VERY great ever since.

Samsung is generally not in my line of products, good amp need good speakers too.

Good luck!!

Hi amav31,
You currently have a 7.1 Onkyo tx-sr605 A/V receiver. If you haven't purchased the speakers yet, firstly, you need to know what is the wattage per channel for each speaker that your receiver is delivering.
It is always a common question when you walk into a audo shop and the seller will ask you what is your budget that you are willing to fork out. I had the same experience when I invested in my 1st set of speaker systems. If you have a budget, tell him that you want an average price range and ask for his recommendations.
What you should do is that since you have the specifications of your receiver and the size of your hall and ask the seller to recommend you several brands of speakers that will compliment with your receiver. Buying a set or speakers is to individual listening liking. It does not mean that expensive set of speakers are better off than average sets.
Listen to the sound quality from the speakers that you like most within the budget range. Make sure that the seller is using a receiver that has the same wattage as yours and you decides from there.
For your information, I am using a 7.1 Yamaha receiver with 7 speakers and a subwoofer. They consisted of 2 front floor standing, 1 centre, 2 rear surround, 2 tweeters mounted below the ceiling but above the rear surround and an active floor firing subwoofer.
The pair of stand alone tweeters are tilted down at an angle where the the sofa is. They are very effective as it emphasise the high pitch, for example the sound of a fighter plane zooming from left to right. The pair of tweeters can be of any brand and costing below S$50 should be sufficient.
As for the active subwoofer, I have owned front firing and down firing one. But in the end, I still prefer floor firing one as it provides a more uniform distribution of the base sound. It sounds even better when the subwoofer is raised between 4" to 6" above the floor by placing something solid below. The purpose is to provide a wider dispersement of downwards sound as otherwise, you will encounter the bounce back effect due to the closeness of the speaker to the floor.
In conclusion, as what I mentioned above, the speakers sound quality must be to your liking and suit the size of your hall.
Though I live in a private property and with a big hall, I use a rather cheap brand of speakers and subwoofer. The important factor to note is to caliberate the distribution of sound from the receiver to the respective speakers.
Though the speakers are cheap, whenever my friends visited me and I turned on a dvd show, they were surprised with the sound quality and "oomph" sound.

Regards
Michael

Hi Michael,

I've a Yamaha 563 and I'm looking for a set of speakers too.  I was recommended Jama A102GCS5($699), Jama S416($799)  and Onkyo ? ($999) and Yahama NS-P125 without sub-woof($808).  Franky, I really don't know which one is good.  The price seems high from  699 - 999.
Any recommedation?

Thanks!
