Despite many tweaks (and through the lifecycles of a few preamps), I've never been able to banish RFI from my phono section. I'm thinking about going to the new battery-powered Nova Phonomena for that reason, on the theory that the RFI is getting in at the power-supply level. Does anyone have any experience relevant to this? I have a normally-shielded MM cartridge (Clearaudio Aurum Beta S) so you wouldn't think the problem would be so difficult, but I live in town, so there's probably a lot of strong FM stations broadcasting into my system.
Dear RFI victim:
Battery-powered phonostages may help, but the ac line is not always the source of the RFI problem. The sensitive amp and equalization stages in most phono preamps are very susceptible to RFI noise, especially if you live in a busy downtown area. Aside from battery power, you should research the level of shielding the preamp employs. The better shielded the delicate phono circuits, the less prone they are to RFI noise.
