I was excited to read Barry's review of a line that I've been eyeballing- Usher's two new budget speakers, the V-601 and 604. To my dissappointment they did not deliver to the reviewer what I was hoping they would. I appreciate TAS's ongoing dedication to budget audio components.
One thing that I find absent from some reviews, which other readers have complained about, is that reviewers often miss opportunities to compare similarly-priced components. This is immensely useful if the reader is in the market, and it seems to happen most often with budget components. A couple of months ago, for example, Barry's review of the Onkyo A-9555 didn't mention how it stacked up against, say, the Rotel RA-1062, or other contenders in that competitive price range. I think it would have been an instructive opportunity for Barry to compare the Usher V-601 to the Paradigm Studio 20, which he just recently reviewed very favorably alongside the Onkyo components. I understand that reviewers aren't always familiar with every component in any given price range, but when they do have references for comparison, differences should be expounded.
Anyway, I'm enjoying this coverage, and perhaps when you get a chance you can give your thoughts on these two monitors?
I was very disappointed with the Usher review. While I appreciate TAS's willingness to actually say negative things about a product, (albeit in what seems to be a standard format of "say 8 nice things, one bad thing, and then end the review") it raises more questions than it answers.
For instance, Barry makes a point of mentioning Dr. D'Appolito's name in the review, with some reverence I would imagine. But why do that, if you are at all familiar with his work, without attempting to explain how he would let such crap-ass speakers out the door? Otherwise, why bring it up? Does Mr. Willis think all of Joe's fans are nuts, or that his association with Usher is a sham?
I have actually never hear an Usher speaker, but I have heard other designs from Joe, using high end Seas drivers, and have always wanted to know how they compare to "real" high-end speakers. How about a serious review of one of Usher's high end models, with some comparison to, say, the Wilson MAXX 2?
Oh, and not to hijack, but what about the fact that Dr. D'Appolito is the new chief designer for Snell? You didn't mention that in your Usher review, and in fact, I'd like to see a Snell review too....
Just my 2 cents.
I thought the review was pretty good. Usher obviously needs to tweak the design before they can compete with Paradigm, B&W, Dynaudio, etc...
Friends, let me show you the turth. A pair of V-601 is selling only at NT6,900 (approx. USD222 only). But you guys are spending a double of its price to get a pair overseas. That is the reason why you think USHER is not a great brand.
