Rega Appollo vs. Onkyo DX-7555 CD players

I'm looking for a new CD player to go with my Musical Fidelity X-CAN V3 headphone amp and AKG K701 headphones. I'm interested in the Rega Appollo and Onkyo DX-7555, but do not have the opportunity to audition them. I'm hoping that someone with experience with these players could give me some input.

Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Urfer,

To make the decision easier, you should probably first decide how much you want to spend, since the Apollo is much more expensive. I haven't heard the Onkyo, but I think the unanimous response would be that the Apollo is the superior player. I have not heard the Apollo either, but I have heard the Planet 2000 (later version) and Jupiter, and they are both extraordinary-sounding players, not to mention beautiful. Another good option is the Rotel RA-1072.

If you live in the U.S., I would strongly suggest looking at the Rega players on Audiogon. If you can live without the warranty, my personal choice would be a used Planet 2000, which will run you less than the new Onkyo. Used Apollos also show up a lot.

I just bought an Onkyo DX-7555. I don't see how you can do much better in the $600 range. It sounds spectacular, crisp and detailed. It has good build quality (made in Malaysia, not China), nice looks, and weighs over 17 pounds. You can get it in black or silver (I got black). Display can be turned off. Digital filter roll-off can be adjusted between sharp or slow. Wolfson's best D/A converter. Plays MP3's (although I never play those). I couldn't recommend it more highly.
