Record Cleaning Solutions

rossop -- Mon, 03/14/2011 - 21:29

I have a Nitty Gritty 1.5 fi. The most recent 1 gallon bottle of Pure 2  I received  had a crack in the bass and when it arrived quite a lot of it had leaked out. Living, as I do, in the country its not possible for me to go and buy some so I have to rely on the Post Office to deliver it.

Now I am wondering if I can make my own. Maybe at least get the VPI concentrate. Any thoughts?

Rossop:

Here is what I use:

1. Get some battery water from Pep Boys (purified/deionized). Mix 5-6 parts water to 1 part organic cleanser from Whole Foods or the like (even Target sells some from time to time). Let the suddsing mix sit on the record for 1-2 minutes then remove.

2. Rinse with pure battery water. 2 rinse cycles may be needed.

3. For used records caked with grease and/or mold, I mix 5-6 parts of the battery water with 1 part clear antibiotic hand gel (Sam's sells their own brand in large containers). Shake the mixture vigorously and apply. Since the mixture contains some alcohol, don't leave it on the record for too long. I have never, ever damaged a record by leaving this mixture in place for 1-2 minutes, but I wouldn't go beyond that, just to be cautious. Again rinse generously with battery water.

4. Mike Fremer reported similar success with alcohol-based record cleaning solutions, but audiophiles are divided over their use.

5. These mixtures will turn cloudy after 4-6 months. When they get cloudy, dump the solution and mix a new, clean batch. Or mix only as needed. Occassionally battery water will get cloudy after 4-6 months, so much sure you store in a clear container and in a cool, dry space.

Let me know what you discover...

Thanks Amandela,
Most of my records are in fairly good condition. I went ahead and got some VPI concentrate and mixed it as directed with distilled (battery) water.I mixed it in with the Pure 2 and it works just fine.
I will make note of your advice. Im sure it will come in handy in the future.
Thanks again
