I wanted to buy the Polk Audio LSi/15 tower speakers after months of auditioning and research and just found out they are (True - 4ohm) speakers with a Recommended 20-250 Watts of AMP. power. My new Yamaha RXV-1500 Receiver is Rated at 120-Watts per channel, but at (8 - ohms). There is a provision to switch to a (6-ohm) impedance load speaker on the Receiver, but that is it. There is nothing in the manual that says it could handle a (4 - ohm) impedance speaker load.
Can I still use this Receiver for these Polks speakers at the (6-ohm) setting and 120 Watts Power Output to the optimum performance of Speakers and Receiver or will I Hurt my Speakers or Receiver. I have already been told no twice and Yes once. I am confused as to buying these speakers. PLEASE HELP!!! THE STORE HAS MY DEPOSIT!
It's hard to know whether the Yamaha will drive the Polks without actually trying it. The louder you want to play the system, the less likely it is that this paring will work.
What's happening is that low-impedance speakers demand more current from the receiver, and receivers vary in their ability to deliver current. At moderate playback levels, I doubt there would be a problem. But as you turn it up, the speakers will demand more and more current from the receiver.
