Does it matter, really, if my equipment rack is a few feet away from my speakers?

To respond to the equipment-rack placement question, the best place for a rack is in a "null" in the room. Play a steady low-frequency tone or music, walk around the room, and listen for the position with the least bass. That's the ideal place for your equipment rack.
