Problems with HDMI connections

I recently bought an Onkyo TX-SR706 AV Receiver. I connected my Panasonic Blu Ray Player, Oppo DVD player and my Comcast Cable Box/DVR  to the three HDMI outlets on the receiver. This was connected to my RCA Scenium HDTV which has only one HDMI input. Most of the time I have the receiver set up for the cable box. When I turn on the equipment I get, most of the time, some video noise, unusable signal message, etc. for a short time before the picture appears. I have learned to make sure that the receiver remote is set to control the cable box. After this clears up I often have problems when I enter a new, not adjacent, channel on the remote. This problem does not appear when running through the channels in order. I also have a similar problem when I switch the remote control to the other two components, the Panasonic and the Oppo.
Any ideas on what I can do to correct this problem?

If I'm not mistaken, what you have is known as HDMI handshake. My receiver does it as well. I've read that it happens when using a switcher, which the receiver is. As far as I know it's nothing to worry about. I've learned to over look it. I'm sure others on here will give you a much better explaination, but that's my take on it.  :)

I'm not sure what can be done to correct it though.

I have the same situation with the Classe SSP-800 controller. It takes four seconds for the "HDMI handshake" to occur, as Natas mentions. This happens every time I scan past commercials on my DVD; it takes four seconds for the system to output audio. The entire HDMI communication and validation process has to be repeated whenever the audio stream is interrupted.

Unfortunately, there' s not much you can do. Perhaps future implementations of HDMI can made this handshake faster.

I also have the Classe SSP 800.  Really great.  Just wondering if you have a problem using DDPLIIX.   I have a 7.1 system and I want to use it to creat 7.1.  from 5.1  The unit lets me use DDSurround EX  but not DDPLIIX.  It lets me use it with the cable box but not with either a Blu Ray or DVD.
