Using DVD players as a source is a pretty common practice. Many of them perform very well. In fact, I recommend that approach to people all of the time.

In my own system, though, I have a universal player and a CD player. I think I do this so my wife can ask me why, then listen to my verbal stumbling as I search for an answer.

As for using portable CD players as a source, I don't have much experience there. I do have one connected to my garage system, but I don't expect much more than noise from it.

I can understand unsing a DVD player, in fact to play DVD-A (hah!) or SACDs you need one. But I think the question is about portable players. I haven't tried it lately, but the last time I did, my AC powered CD player sounded much better. I assume this is because the D/A converters and analog outputs are much better.

For many years, I used a Sony C75ES CD player. When I decided to retire it from service, I used a Panasonic DVD (RV32), purchased in 2001, for both audio and video. I thought it sounded better than my old Sony.

The RV32 was widely regarded as an excellent value back then with very good audio reproduction. Currently, I am awaiting delivery of a new universal player that will come with some custom modifications. This will be used in my HT system which includes Orb Audio speakers (6.1) and subwoofer together with a Yamaha HTR-5860 AV receiver and Sony
Bravia LCD 40" XBR HDTV.

Universal players (DVD-A, CD, SACD) have gained in popularity and are widely accepted even among "high end" enthusiasts. There are many excellent players from which to choose. To name a few: Denon, Marantz, Pioneer Elite, Arcam and NAD all make excellent universal players. For a lot less money than players with these names, the Samsung HD 950 is worth a look. As a stock player, out of the box, it sounds better than many more expensive CD players I have heard. In addition, it comes with an HDMI output and HDMI cable.
