Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD

-- Mon, 07/20/2009 - 21:37

It is my understanding that the new Pioneer Elite BDP-09FD can output 24/192 via its anolog outputs since it has 8 Wolfson DACs built in.  Please correct me if I am wrong.  If that is the case, then why do we need a digital processor.  Why not use a multi channel analog preamp such as the Audio Research MP1 or Emm Labs SVM3 switch as your volume control?

The Pioneer is designed to offer the best performance possible for people with analog inputs, so you could use it with a preamp like the Halo P 7 or another totally analog preamp and still get fantastic performance from it.

I have the Pioneer BDP-09FD.  I run its multichannel analog outputs into the Bryson SP1.7's multichannel passthrough inputs.  I have to do this for DD-HD and DTS-HD as the Bryston doesn't decode them.  HOWEVER, when I've compared the Pioneer's analog output for 2-channel CD vs using the Bryston as an ext DAC, the Pioner was superior.  Also, when I compared Pioneer's Dolby 5.1 analog out vs Bryston doing the decoding, the Pioneer again was better.  Finally, the Pioneer on CD playback is better than the Arcam DV-27A (which Shane Buettner raved about in TPV).  SO, unless your AV processor's digital processing significantly better than the Bryston SP1.7, you're better off using the Pioneer's analog outs for CD, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital True HD......one caveat- you will then need a good multichannel analog preamp or a processor with high quality multichannel analog passthrough such as the Bryston's..

My sentiments exactly about the Pioneer.  I am considering a pure analong preamplifier such as the Audio Research MP1.  I have a particular interest in a tube preamp.  I have 2 parasound monoblocks and a classe multi channel amp to drive speakers.  I currently have a parasound c2 controller which I am considering switching for a audio research MP 1.  Thanks for your opinon.
