Paying Respects to John Potis

Dear Editor,

It is somewhat disheartening to see the premiere high end audio publication, The Absolute Sound. not mention the recent (Dec 22, 2008) and untimely passing of John Potis, an audio reviewer, formerly of 6Moons.com and most recently at Positive Feedback Online. While those two online publications have of course reported on John’s passing on their websites and noted his many contributions to our hobby, other online publications such as Soundstage.com and others have also paid their respects to one of high end audio’s own. It would be very appropriate and I am sure comforting to all the audiophiles who have consumed John’s reviews and relied on his expertise if your esteemed publication and website would pay its respects to John and his family whom he leaves behind. My two cents worth. I am an avid consumer of The Absolute Sound and AVGuide.com, and think you guys and gals do a great job. I just thought it would be nice, as one of the most respected audiophile publications, if John’s contributions would be remembered on your site as well. Thank you very much for all the work that you do to bring the high end to a broader public.

Respectfully yours,

Cyril Malak

I did not know John Potis personally and, to be honest, am not familiar with his audio reviews (I think this is the primary reason for the silence at TAS), but if John made his living or any part of it in this profession then he is owed a farewell from us. My sympathies go out to his family and friends.

I was unaware of the passing of John Potis, did not know him personally, but enjoyed his audio reviews. There was a piece he did for 6moons on Bill Legall and friends (RoadTour 13), among others, that was wonderful. As one who also struggled with taming the resonances on large Infinity loudspeakers for years, I thought it was quite insightful and conveyed a real enthusiasm for this hobby and the people who participate in it.
From a post on another forum, I understand that John died suddenly from cancer. My heart goes out to his family and friends. John will also be missed by many in this small community of ours.

Those of you who didn't know about John can learn a little more by reading this: http://www.positive-feedback.com/Issue41/potis.htm
I didn't know him well either, but shared his name.
