Novice seeks home audio system - looking for input.

I am a complete novice when it comes to home audio systems .... I do not even know the appropriate terminology to use when asking about them. With that said, I will try to explain what I am looking for and would appreciate input/advice on what to purchase:
I live in a house with a 1200 sq main floor; it is rectangular with large openings between rooms. Ceilings are ~9'. I like to listen to music in the living room/dining room and also have speakers in the kitchen. I would like to be able to listen to am/fm radio, have a cd player, and also be able to connect my ipod. If possible, I would like to have wireless speakers or some speakers that are wireless (e.g. the ones in the kitchen). I listen to talk radio, jazz, blues, and rock/pop music from the 70s and 80s. I do not need to hook a TV up to this system.
Ideas?

What is your budget for the entire system? Do you currently have any components that you plan to include in the system? Can you have freestanding speakers in the livign room?
I'd like to keep the cost under $2k, ideally around $1k, but do not know if that is reasonable. I have no components, other than my ipod ,that I would include in the system. Freestanding speakers are fine. Thanks.
