My father is on his 2nd set of Quad ESL 2905s already.
The 1st set had a panel failure, and also one speaker kept triggering his McIntosh amp (MC501s) protection/distorting then recovered and played same track again without fault.
His 2nd pair also has one unit that triggers protection, yet played fine for a
fortnight once spades were fitted.
Now speaker regular & intermittently causes amp to fault (and to whichever mono amp it is connected.)
He tried to part ex against Tannoys, but the industry grapevine has it that they have acute reliability issues.
So caveat emptor when buying new Quads or 2nd hand 2905/2805 ESLs.
Has he tried other amps to be sure that isn't the problem?
1st rule of troubleshooting: Assess the most common variable in the problematic system, and change it (or, in this case, perhaps check the specs on the MAC Amp - and honestly, call MAC because most printed specs are crap). Quads are not a difficult load technically (well, eh) but they do require the proper amplifier as a proper mate.

I am a former owner of Sound Lab A-1's, but now have Majestic 845's. They blow Quad's away on every level. Tonality, extension at the extremes, loudness, imaging. Plus, they are still hand made in America, unsurpassed quality and reliability.
