New HTPC - why?

Why do I want something like this:

for $6k instead of a vanilla full-featured desktop from HP, Dell or Gateway?

Not saying it is bad, I just don't get it.

This Alienware box made a bit more sense to me:

While it is $5-7k, it has wireless HD and 4 terabytes of storage. It is effectively a PC, a media extender, and a Network Attache Storage device in one box. Maybe more.
