New Black Screens

Jim Hannon -- Fri, 08/05/2005 - 21:15

My ideal for viewing movies is a front projector with a large screen. However, most affordable front projectors don't work well in rooms with some ambient light.

I was intrigued by the new black screen that mates with the Sony Cineza HS51 LCD projector. Have other passive black screens (or active screens?) been announced that can bring the big screen experience to those without dedicated home theaters?

Thanks
Jim

Screen Innovations has announced a screen called the Mirage. It should be available in October. It works on a different principle that the Sony screen. The Sony, as I understand it, reflects only the wavelenghts of light that the projector puts out (red, green, blue) for example. The Mirage is a lenticular screen that only reflects light that is coming almost straight at it. I've seen the Mirage, and it works really well. The caveat is that if you have a window on the wall opposite the screen, it doesn't work much better than a regular screen. But if your windows and lights are off to the side, then this screen is a revelation. Needs a bright projector, too.

Screen Innovations recently changed the name of their product to Visage (some sort of copyright issue). Also, a company called dnp, which manufactures the screen material for SI, also markets a version under their own name.

I have already posted a note about how happy I am with my newest screen and the ambient light dose not affect the image with the www.grayhawkavs.com Platinum screen. I purchased one and I am so impressed I cant belive it. The colors are compleatly real and the balcks are truly black. I have two theater rooms and one is conected to our game room and lighting was always a problem. I treid all of the top screen companys that advertised screens that worked in ambient light they were all wrong and I wasted a lot of money. The www.grayhawkavs.com (Not to be confused with the Stewart Grayhawk)
screens are a third of the cost of a high end brand name screen and they are twice as good. take a look and let me know what you think all I know is that I have tried them all and I finaly found the one that works for my situation.

Let me know your thoughts

John

Just a quick post to let forum participants know that Playback 9 will feature comparisons of several very significant high-contrast screens--specifically, of the dnp Supernova One and the new Screen Innovations Black Diamond screens.

Have we reached the "holy grail" of being able to enjoy front projection systems in illuminated rooms. I'd say we're certainly getting close, which I personally find very exciting news. Watch for reviews in PB9, which will come out early in June 2008.

For over a year now with several different projectors.

Its the same material that DNP uses (actually made by DNP for Screen Innovations.)

I have their smallest size, a 70" diagonal 16x9.

I reviewed it for Ultimate AV quite some time ago.

It lets my wife read on the couch while I watch a basketball game.

How domestically tranquil is that?

Well, until my team starts losing it's tranquil...

Playback digital magazine's coverage of these screens (screens that work well with ambient light) can be read here, on page 166:
