I would appreciate any recommendations for a small subwoofer under $300(or thereabouts) for use with a Yamaha YSP 3050 Digital Sound Projector. Yamaha recommends the YST FSW050, but I don't know anything about subwoofers or what to look for when buying one.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well, for your purposes almost any subwoofer from a well-known company will fill your needs.
You don't need anything larger than a single 10" driver to keep up with the sound-bar. I would look on the web at the small subs from Aperion, Axion, and AV123. They all have units that are within your price-point and they all can offer you good service.
If you have a local dealer I would look at units from PSB, Paradigm, and Earthquake. These are only a few brands of many that you may find locally. The most important thing is to make sure that whatever you buy has a cross-over built in as well as level and phase controls.

I purchased a YSP-3000 at the end of 2008 for my apartment. After using it by itself for a few months I went on a search for a sub. I quickly decided another Yamaha unit wasn't going to cut the mustard in this case. After some hem-hawing I bought a Velodyne DEQ-10R on a steal of a deal from Audio Advisor. The combined built-in room correction of the Velodyne and the Yamaha units made for a seamless pairing. My only reservation is that the Velo is a ported enclosure, and I have always preferred the smooth lower extensions of sealed boxes in any size. Fortunately apartment living keeps from exercising the upper limits of my volume control, so I have been very happy with my purchase.
Velodyne has the Impact 10 which can be had for around $299. It's a reliable unit that sounds good for the price, and it's made by a company that knows a thing or two about subwoofers.
Hey, great article. Last night there was a 4.4 magnitude earthquake here in Los Angeles. That's not big but it does get you thinking about things. Anyway, nice site... I'm subscribed to your feed now so thanks again!
