Must-Hear Albums

Tom Martin -- Tue, 06/24/2008 - 12:37

I've been listening to Rock, Pop and Folk for many years. But reading forums posts and Playback has made me realize that there are lots of bands I don't know. What is your short list of "must-hear" recent (last 5-10 years) albums?

Ka33ka -- Tue, 06/24/2008 - 12:44

Kings of Leon – Aha Shake Heartbreak
Counting Crows – August and Everything After
Incubus – Make Yourself
U2 – Joshua Tree

The Ting Tings are on fire right now. I'm really enjoying their stuff.

I don't like "That's not My Name" as much as I like "Shut Up and Let Me Go" and "Great DJ"

"Great DJ" is really rockin!!

klynnp -- Fri, 06/27/2008 - 16:06

I agree - I like Great DJ a lot.
I don't know much about the Ting Tings though - is this their first album?

Ka33ka -- Fri, 06/27/2008 - 16:18

Yes it is.

It's amazing. It hit the UK charts #1 and the highest position it ever got here in the US was #78

Interesting...

Tom Martin -- Fri, 06/27/2008 - 17:23

Would you rate The Ting Tings as "must hear" or "good new stuff I love right now but who knows if they're really great"?

Ka33ka -- Fri, 06/27/2008 - 17:30

As far as I can tell now they are just good music I like to hear now. I don't even know if I could listen to the whole album in one sitting...her voice is very unique.

I'd have to second that Ting Tings are nowhere near must-hear.

Brighter than Creations Dark - Drive By Truckers.
Hittin' the note - Allman Brothers (might be older than 5 years).
Free Somehow - Widespread Panic.
Seeing Things - Jacob Dylan.
Stairs and Elevators - Heartless Bastards.

These are pretty nuch mainstream.
Hope you can access/enjoy.

recent discoveries for me include Heavy's Great Vengeance & the Furious Five, Darker My Love's 2, The Duke Spirit's Neptune, & Rose Hill Drive's Moon Is The New Earth. All highly recommended. ,..overall over the last cple of yrs for me three best bands by far (& you can any of their albums really) are Wilco, Kings of Leon and Incubus...all very different.

Those wanting a relaxing, carefree listen might seek out the debut from Little Joy. The trio features the Strokes' drummer but the music is very simple, distinguished by acoustic melodies, bossa nova accents and conversational vocals. Imagine the pop you might hear spilling from a European cafe.

A few of my favorites.....
NIN - The Downward Spiral, Broken, Pretty Hate Machine, and The Fragile.
Tool - Lateralus, Undertow, and AEnima
10 Years - The Autumn Effect, and Division
Atomship - The Crash Of '47
Porcupine Tree - In Absentia, Deadwing, and Fear Of A Blank Planet
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
