MUSIC SERVERS AND USB OUTPUT

HAS ANYBODY OUT THERE SET UP A HARD DRIVE BASED MUSIC SYSTEM GOING DIRECTLY TO THE USB OUTPUT ON THEIR COMPUTER?. DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF THE USB PROTOCOL IS FLAWED IN A WAY THAT WOULD AFFECT THE MUSIC SIGNAL? I HAVE SET UP A MUSIC SERVER THIS WAY BUT I WOULD LIKE SOME FEEDBACK IF ANYBODY ELSE HAS DONE SO

What D/A converter are you using?

THE USB OUTPUT IS GOING TO A DIGITAL PCLINK USB TO S/PDIF CONVERTER. FROM THERE THE S/PDIF DIGITAL SIGNAL IS GOING TO MY ADCOM GCD-750 CD PLAYER'S DIGITAL INPUT FOR CONVERSION, THEN TO A PREAMP. YOU SHOULD DOWNLOAD AN ASIO AUDIO DRIVER TO BYPASS THE WINDOWS DRIVER IF YOU ARE USING AN IBM TYPE PC. IT ALL WORKS VERY WELL. I AM USING FOOBAR2000 AS MY FRONTEND SOFTWARE, IT CAN RIP TO MANY LOSSLESS COMPRESSION CODECS AND PLAY THEM.

It seems to me that you have an easy comparison: CD vs. same file on your hard drive. Have you tried that, and what are the results?

I don't know about the USB standard, but assuming bits are bits, jitter (timing) would seem to be the primary potential problem, and one that should be solvable by the D/A converter (though some may not accomplish this)?
