If Marantz is to your liking, you might check out their '7900 universal player while you are at it. That would give you more flexibility. The unit can be easily configured to play DVD-A in two channel, and retains it's programming memory. Pop a disc in, hit play and it goes. DVD-A almost always requires a video connection though, for initial setup. The sound is very good, though.
I suggest this only because if you are in pursuit of hi-res playback, adding DVD-A capability expands the number of titles you can select from. Limiting yourself to SACD can be frustrating sometimes.
I reviewed the expensive Marantz in TAS, and have not heard the lower-priced units. I have heard, however, from ears I trust that the lower-cost units are superb, and come very close to the upper-end units.
I have an SA8260 and enjoy it very much. I have had problems with it reading 2 SACDs and some red book CDs. I have tried one of the offending dics on several 8260s and it seems to a line problem. Their reference series plays this SACD as do other SACD players. I am working with the retailer who is working with Marantz to resolve the problem. This is a problem with the SA8260 and not my individual machine.
I prefer the less expensive model. I cannot discern enough difference between the two to justify the additional cost.
Thanks.
