Marantz SR4600 Question

Grantsburg -- Tue, 09/19/2006 - 15:37

Among other things I have an Olive Symphony music server (Love it!) and Sirius Satellite hooked up to my Marantz SR4600 Receiver. I have the Olive hooked up with a TOSLINK cable and the Sirius is hooked up to the analog DSS/VCR2 jacks. Both work fine. Now the Olive has the ability to record from analog sources such as tape decks. I decided I wanted to record from Satellite radio so I hooked up the output jacks from DSS/VCR2 to the input jacks on the Olive. Simple enough. However, when I went to record I got no input signal. To make a long story short, I evenutally found that if I left the Sirius hooked up to the DSS/VCR2 input jacks and used the TAPE output jacks I then got the satellite output signal routed to the Olive Music Server! IE: The Sirius input is going to the DSS/VCR2 input jacks, but the output, instead of coming from DSS/VCR2, is actually coming from the TAPE output jacks! So yeah, everything works fine setup this way, but why is the Sirius output signal coming from a different set of jacks than the input signal ???

There's no record output available from the DSS/VCR2 hookup because no device can record to itself. That's why you're getting Sirius from the Marantz's tape out jacks. When you select Sirius as source, it is routed to the tape out.

Maybe I'm just dense, but that doesn't make sense to me. I'm not trying to 'record to itself' as you put it. Line outs are line outs and whatever input coming into the line in jack should be routing the output through the line out jacks. Otherwise, why are the lineouts even there?

You are right -- any input you select is available at line out, except for tape loops, like VCR2. VCRs can record, but not to themselves. That's why there's no output from VCR2 Out when you select VCR2 as a source. If you put your Sirius receiver into a different input (say, CD) its output would be available at the VCR2 Out jack, and you could then record Sirius on your Olive.
