Hi Ronald,

In a 13x12 listening room, you don't have space for the 12.1... or even the 3.7. You'll also need more that the 160 W/ch of your D300 to drive the 12.1 adequately. Maggies eat Watts for breakfast (trade-off for their bargain prices!).

In your room, the new 1.7 should be wonderful. The reviews have been stellar - a big improvement over the 1,6, which was always a great sounding speaker itself.

Kudos to you for wanting Maggies, even in your small room. They are great speakers, and a huge bargain!

Do you mean 20.1? The OP mentioned the 12's, which are smaller than the 1.7's -- the size between the 1.7 and the MMG.

Mea Culpa! You are, of course, correct. I was thinking of the big 20.1, not the smaller 12. Sorry about that!

I still stand by my recommendation of the 1.7, especially if you're not going to add a sub. The MMG is a nice sounding speaker, but won't give you that last octave or so. haven't heard the 12, but I suspect it's about the same.
Lastly, the 1.7 has gotten RAVE reviews all around.

Agree with your recommendation. The 1.7 is good to 40 Hz or so and can be used without a sub, but the MMG and 12 are distinctly bass shy without. And if you do use a sub, it's a lot easier to merge it with the 1.7 than it would be with a higher crossover. Also, the stock 1.7 has a better image; you can modify the MMG and 12 to raise them to ear level, but if it's in the budget, I'd recommend the 1.7 (or a used 1.6).

Just be sure you have sufficient space to place them well away from the wall behind them.

Yeah, if your room is open so you can put them at least 3' preferably 5' from the rear wall and preferably 2' from the side walls and you don't mind the size the 1.6's or 1.7's should do fine.

It's been a long time since I've had any Maggies and I remember they're very power hungry. I was pushing them with 150w per side and was wishing for 200w. What I distinctly remember was how they handled stringed instruments. I have yet to hear anything that reproduces strings so sweetly. Naturally light on the bass but it was a tradeoff I could live with. (This was very early subwoofer days)
Fred and Josh are correct about placing them well out from the wall, the more the better. You can push them up against the wall and they just sound horrible. I remember when the first small Maggies came out I was surprised how horizontal their dispersion was. When I stood with my ears above speaker level, there was a substantial drop in the sound level. Not sure if this would be an issue or not.
