Magnepan 2.7's

ICEDOG -- Thu, 06/02/2011 - 13:07

I was wondering if a Rotel 1572 amp would be a good match for the Magnepan 2.7's, It is a class D amp with rave reviews but was wondering if that would complicate things with the maggies?
2nd: and opinion on which sounds better the Maggie 2.7's or the new 1.7's??
Thanks for input, Da Dog

Judging by its 4 ohm specs, the Rotel should do just fine.
I think you'll find that the 1.7 is a better speaker than the much older 2.7, though it won't go as deep in the bass and you may ultimately want a sub. They've made significant improvements in the design of the crossover and midwoofer. If you're interested in the old 2.x series, I'd look at the 2.5R and the 2.6R. They have a version of Magnepan's legendary true ribbon tweeter, rather than the quasi ribbon tweeter of the 2.7 and 1.7.
Another consideration when considering an old Maggie that hasn't had a factory overhaul (some of them have, that's usually mentioned in the ad) is that if the wires are starting to come loose the speaker may have to be rebuilt, either by Magnepan or at home with their rebuild kit. That can add significantly to cost or, if you do it yourself, effort. You might want to look at used 1.7's on Audiogon, I understand the price has dropped, but they're newer and use the improved adhesives they introduced in 2005, so they won't require rebuilding. You'll be getting a speaker that's almost new.

If you read the review of the 1.6 in TAS from years back, JV finds the 2.7 in many ways inferior to the 1.6.  Many are available used for a huge discount, due to the 1.7 now being available.  JV's findings on the 1.7 outdo the 1.6 in every concievable paramater as well, if you want to spend the money on the new model.
I own the 1.6, and intend to modify the crossover in the future, but if I had the money available, I would most definitely spend the extra loot on the 1.7.
