LP Stores in New York City

Cemil Gandur -- Wed, 07/22/2009 - 10:02

Sorry for posting this here, but the sections related to music seem to be dead!
I'll be visiting New York very soon and was wondering if anyone knows of a good LP store (or two) that I could visit. My interests are mainly jazz, with a bit of rock and soul thrown in.

Thanks for any suggestions

for the real old-school experience you could try downstairs records...i haven't been in the current store, but used to haunt them, and they do love their vinyl. http://www.downstairsrecords.com/
then walk along carmine street in the west village--there should still be several of the old stores like vinyl mania, rockit scientist, house of oldies.
i haven't been into bleecker bob's in years, but i believe they still do vinyl as well  (west 3rd st)
there's a place called rose records on i think east 12th street, just west of broadway, and that's almost 100% vinyl
kim's has recently downscaled itself and moved onto first avenue, i think just below saint marks place...i haven't been in yet and don't know if they still have all the vinyl they used to.
academy records on 18th street between 5th and 6th avenues has a back room with a lot of LPs, but the emphasis here is on classical music. still i think you'll find some jazz, and they are very careful with what they buy. you can also ask them for stuff and they'll likely have it in storage and get it for you.
ask in any of these places and the clerks will probably clue you in on other good places to try out...

(woops--my apologies--i didn't look closely at the downstairs records site--looks like they've moved their store to long island somewhere...too bad...but it might even be worth the extra trip out there!)

Academy Records is a good place to start. They have a good selection at fair prices. Their three locations are listed on their web site, http://www.academy-records.com/stores.php. As I recall, the store at 415 E. 12th St. has mostly jazz and pop/rock LPs, while the one at 12 W. 18th St. has a lot of CDs and a bunch of mostly classical LPs, plus toy dinosaurs everywhere you look. They also have an outpost in Brooklyn; call to find out what they carry.

Other Music at 15 E. 4th St. between Broadway and Lafayette (http://www.othermusic.com/) has CDs and a collection of unusual LPs (not much jazz, though, as far as I recall). It's a small independent shop that's fun to visit.

There are several stores that sell LPs in Greenwich Village, including Bleecker Bob's at 118 W. 3rd St. and Bleecker Street Records at 239 Bleecker St. As I recall, they're on the pricey side, but I could be confusing them with other shops.

You can also peruse the list at http://www.recordstoreday.com/Venues?state=NY, which includes all of New York state. That site includes links to the stores' web pages when available. It's not comprehensive - it onlyincludes stores that participated in Record Store Day.

Thank you both for posting.
Unfortunately, I didn't have the time to go to ANY record store during my visit there! However, I am keeping your suggestions for next time.
