Loud noise when using my turntable

 Hi,
I have noticed a loud distortion and noise when using my turntable. I have a Rega P2. This noise occurs at random or when the tonearm cable is moved. There was some bare wire in the tonearm cable close to the RCA jacks. The exposed wire was covered up with tape and the cable was checked and no more bare wires were seen but the issue persists. My phono preamp is a lehmann black cube. My question is should I rewire the tonearm or is this a phono preamp issue? My amp is a NAD c325.
Thanks,
Rick

Frankly, the only way to tell is by trial and error.

Does the noise happen when the black cube is NOT connected to the turntable? If only with the turntable attached then it is UPSTREAM from the preamp in the turntable wiring. To confirm I would attach another turntable or just tonearm.cart to see if the problem is still there, if not again that points toward the turntable's wiring.

It could be static build-up and discharge - try a different grounding scheme.

The more I've thought about your problem, the more convinced I am that you have static discharge issue.

I had a similar problem MANY years ago with a RABCO arm that would go BLAM! periodically - grounding the tonearm to the chassis of the preamp solved the problem.

You could try that...

This does sound like a grounding problem.

Steve, thanks for the advise. I've put together my linn lp12 with good grounding and have not had an issue. I have stopped using my rega and tried but was unsuccessful at adding a ground wire through the left lead. I've enjoyed your articles on the audiophile review, great stuff and appreciated your insight.
