Looking for a 2 Channel CD/SACD Player on the Used Market

llad -- Sat, 03/25/2006 - 15:23

Lately there have been some newer CDs that my Sony DVP S9000ES does not recognize. In particular the 30th Anniversary remastering of BORN TO RUN. Sony is aware of the issue, but could only offer my money back for the box set.

In any event I am looking for a single box 2 channel CD/SACD player on the used market (Audiogon) that will play the newer CDs as well as CD-Rs, that is reasonably priced. By reasonably priced, I mean in the low 4 figure range.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations.

Have you looked through the older recommended products listings from TAS and TPV under "AVguide Recommends" (just below the red Forums button?

Well, considering that I have every issue of TAS since December 1981 on my bookself...

Want I am trying to avoid is the mistake I made in buying the DVP S9000ES. After buying it through Audiogon years ago, to my displeasure I discover that when I started to amass a collection of CD-Rs I could not play them on this player.

Since it is almost impossible to audition a previously owned unit for sale on line (unless the party selling it lives near you) and since dealers carry only the current models, I was hoping that some of the learned folk here might suggest players that would meet my requirements as a stepping off point for my search. Reviewers never seem to mention whether players will play CD-Rs or not.

I'd like to offer several suggestions that may help you meet your goals. These are ranked by price, from the most to the least expensive.

1. Used Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista SACD player. I have used this vacuum tube-equipped unit as my reference player for more than two years, and have yet to find a CD-R it won't play. (See TAS review archived on this site).

2. Used (or new) Sony SCD-XA9000ES. (See TAS review archived on this site).

3. New Sony DVP-NS9100ES. (See the review in the current digital edition of TPV, which can be downloaded at no charge through this site). A two-generations newer version of the DVP-S9000ES.

4. Used (or new) Sony DVP-NS999ES (See TAS review archived on this site). A one-generation newer version of the DVP-S9000ES. Note: Modified versions of this players can sound exceptionally good.

5. Used (or new) mid-level Denon universal players. I suggest Denons because a number of reputable modification specialists (e.g., ModWright, and others) offer worthwhile, audiophile-oriented upgrades for these players.
