locked store demo mode in yamaha dvd player - help?

gmachaut -- Fri, 06/09/2006 - 23:26

oes anyone have any help to offer with a Yamaha dvd player?

somehow, my Yamaha DVD player seems to have gotten locked into the store demo mode - in this mode, the drawer will not open and the power switch does not allow you to turn the unit off. any attempt to open it or turn it OFF displays "LOCKED" on the unit's LCD display.

pulling the plug out is the only way to turn it off.

the model is a bit older: it is the yamaha dvd-s1200.
but i'm hoping that someone might know the codes, or maybe Yamama has a standard pattern of store demo codes that are entered with the remote?

thanks much in advance for any help!

It sounds as though the unit is simply defective. I have never heard of a store-demo mode that disables some functions.

there is at least one publicly available reference to a locked store demo mode for another company's players. view the specs of almost all the current denon models
http://www.usa.denon.com/ProductDetails/228.asp
in the detailed specfications section look for "Lock Drawer Mode (Store Demo)"

scouring other sites finds other mention of a player needing to be reset or reinitialized with some key combination (7 + stop button, play + stop button, play +open/close buttons, etc)

hey, in case anyone ever happens to want to know the answer to this: I just did a wonderful bit of sleuthing, and i managed to follow a trail that led me to the answer:

when player's power is on, no disc in tray
- press and simultaneously hold 3 buttons on the unit:
1. PAUSE
2. REVERSE ( << )
3. OPEN/CLOSE

after a few seconds,
unit's display will show
INITIALIZE

then, release only the PAUSE button, and press the STOP button (while still holding down REVERSE and OPEN/CLOSE).
display will show "RESET". release all buttons. let the unit do it's thing.

after a few moments, display will read "CLOSE", it will attempt to read a disc, and then will display "NO DISC".

success!

Thanks for that information. I didn't know about the store-demo mode of some products, and I once worked in a hi-fi store (but in the days before virtually every product had some sort of microprocessor).
