LCD response time?

neil.gader -- Tue, 10/31/2006 - 10:42

I've noticed that the response time (lag) for LCD flat panels can vary. What do you think is the maximum limit before it becomes distracting? In your opinion, which displays are doing the best job? And, is there a correlation between this measurement and the pricing?

thanks in advance,

In my view, a response time greater than 8 milliseconds is perceptible. Fortunately, many modern panels meet or beat this threshold; for example, some of the new Sharps go as low as 4ms. There is probably some correlation between response time and price, but this difference is rendered insignificant by the dramatic overall price drops affecting the entire product category.

Thanks for the reply, which leads me to my next question. If the response time is no longer a major issue distinguishing plasma and LCD performance then what are the major remaining issues (if any) that I should consider before choosing one over the other? Viewing angle? Color fidelity?

Thanks again, Neil

The issues are summarized in TPV issue 71 (October); please see the flat-panel buyer's guide, in which I discuss this very subject in some detail.
