Lavry DA11 coverage/review ?

USAudio -- Thu, 07/08/2010 - 17:56

The Benchmark DAC1 (HDR) is reviewed again in the latest The Absolute Sound.  It's also been heavily reviewed in Stereophile as well.  However there's one very similar product that doesn't appear to have been covered at all by either publication that, anecdotally, is preferred over the DAC1 by many audiophiles: the Lavry DA11.  http://www.lavryengineering.com/productspage_pro_da11.html
I'm sure the DAC1 is an excellent product but given its already extensive coverage you would do your readers a great service by also covering similar competitive products, such as the Lavry DA11.

Either that model or the DA 10.  The Benchmark has been done to death.

Here's my detailed review of the DA-11...

if you PM me, I can send you a PDF version which has some additional material, compared to what was published.

The Lavry goes up to 96 kHz sampling; performance via the USB interface is so-so, the user interface is, uh, unusual :). The DAC section itself is quite good.

I told Chris and Robert about these posts. Thanks. Note that not every manufacturer is willing/able to supply requested review units (I have no idea about Lavry, but we have several requests going on a year with no fulfillment).

Hello All,

There is some very preliminary coverage on the Lavry in my Can Jam 2010 Blog, Part 2, which includes a brief description of the DA11 along with a photo of the unit. Here's the link: http://www.avguide.com/blog/can-jam-chicago-2010-international-head-fi-m...

Another unit I found fascinating and that I think deserves more recognition is the Antelope Audio Zodiac+ DAC/Headphone Amp. Potentially, though, the upcoming Zodiac Gold model might be of even greater interest to TAS readers. Here's the link to my Can Jam 2010 Blog, Part 1, which includes a brief description of the Antelope and a photo of the unit. Here's the link: http://www.avguide.com/blog/can-jam-chicago-2010-international-head-fi-m...

Open-ended question: Would forum participants like to see either or both of these product reviewed in Playback? Let us know.

Best,

Chris Martens

Thanks guys!  I thought it at least merited some recognition given it is such a close competitor in features, sound quality, price, etc. to the DAC1 HDR.
I've been keeping an eye on the Antelope Audio Zodiac+ however that is a significantly more expensive product than the DAC1 HDR or DA11.

USAudio,

I think you're absolutely right about the Antelope. In talking with the Antelope representative at Can Jam, I came away with the impression that the firm saw the Zodiac+ as a "three-in-one" product: one part DAC, one part headphone amp, and--this is the somewhat unusual element--one part condensed version of Antelope's famous high-precision studio clocking systems. In fact, the representative told me he expected some Zodiac customers would buy the unit solely to enjoy its precision de-jittering/re-clocking capabilities. Interesting, no?

Best,

Chris Martens
