Lamp life

How long should a lamp last in a front projector? I've got nearly 1200 hours on my Sony VPV-VW50 and the picture doesn't seem as bright as when the projector was new, and the color balance seems a little off.

1200 hours is very good. I usually replace bulbs sometime between 1500 and 2000 hours

I would expect to see some light output loss and some color shift, but the question is whether the loss and color shift can be corrected.

If the answer is no, it's time for a new bulb.

I only have 240 hrs on my VP-50, but my Optoma HD80 has around 1200 hours with no serious light loss or color shifts yet, which is somewhat unusual in that Optoma projectors have a reputation for "eating" bulbs with some regularity.

Thanks for the insight. I've just bought a replacement lamp for the VPL-VW50 and will see how that looks.

Is there anywhere on the menus that tells you how many hours on the lamp? I have the same projector, but haven't got the slightest clue about how many hours passed. Still looks good though.

Yes, on all the Sony projectors you can find out the lamp hours in the menu. Its usually in the set-up box, but could be in config or INFO sections of the menu.
