Thank you for the Absolute Sound, issue 213, article on sound cards. It raised a couple questions for me as I consider building a music server and record vinyl to digital for auto playback.
1. When Karl mentions using upgraded cables, I would like to know which cables.
2. As with all comparisons there will always be a reader asking, "How does it compare with my sound card?" Many of us have the Asus Xonar Essence STX and wonder how the cards compare.
I was surprised to read the Juli@ beat out the Lynx by a wide margin. The review has me rethinking about purchasing the Lynx.
Thank you for the review.
Karl,
Thank you for your sound card review in TAS issue 213. How do the the E-MU 0204 and ESI cards work as A/D converters? Have you tried recording vinyl to digital on any of these cards?
Regards,
Noel
Hi Karl
I've just readed your TAS card survey. Needless to say that it is evident that you have researched a lot about sound cards. I'm completely with you because I own an ESI Juli@ card since late 2008, permanently installed in my customized HTPC. I also run my music through Foobar (thanks to its ASIO capabilities) I use VTL monoblocks power amps, a venerable Concordant Excelsior valve preamplifier and a pair of Spendor Sp2/3 modified speakers with separate crossovers. Let me tell you I´m a totally devoted to analog sound via an Audioméca Romance Turntable and Arm with Kiseki and Shure cartridges. I simply can't stand digital sound till I tried (and lately purchased) a Juli@ card. Nowadays I hardly listen to analog music...sadly. But I have to confess that the Juli@ opened a new world to me. It's inexpensive, it's cute, it's easy and cleverly designed and engineered. I doubt if there is a better audiophile sounding card or DAC out there.
I also compared it side by side to a YBA Signature Cd player (2 power chasis plus player chasis) and the results beaten the french one. By the way, the YBA costs 30 times the cost of my HTPC, Juli@ included.
So, I have to thank you for your precise and transparent review. It´s the first time I can read something so informative about the ESI Juli@.
Best regards from Spain
