Jazz Reissues on Vinyl---What are the MUST haves?

Jim Hannon -- Tue, 03/28/2006 - 16:00

There have been many jazz reissues on vinyl to date.

What are the half-dozen or so that are "must haves?"

Well, Jim, whittling it down to six is difficult and highly subjective. For me, "must-haves" would include a few 45 editions from Acoustic Sounds. They're expensive but sound awesome. It's hard to go wrong, but I would look at either Thelonious Monk's In Action, Briilliant Corners, or Coltrane's Blue Train; from Classic, Miles' Kind of Blue or Sketches of Spain, Satchmo Plays King Oliver, Sinatra The Voice, Ella Fitzgerald's newly reissued Songs From Let No Man Write My Epitaph, and of course you should consider one of Mosaic's Andrew Hill or Miles titles, such as Live At The Plugged Nickel.

I know what you mean about whittling down the list.

Thanks for your suggestions. I have the Ella reissue and I love it.
I'll check out the others.

I've also been enjoying a number of the Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins reissues.
