I actually really liked Iron Man! I didn't think I would...but it was really entertaining.
It's "Rated PG-13 for some intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence, and brief suggestive content." If your stepson is pretty mature, I'd take him to see it and just cover his eyes during a certain short scene with Robert Downey Jr. and Leslie Bibb.
I think Ironman would introduce children under 10 to concepts they may not be ready to deal with such as good versus evil, redemption, friendship and love.
Clearly they should wait until they are older to be introduced to those concepts as well as going to sleep with the light off.

Hey, there's nothing wrong with going to sleep with the lights on!! Not speaking from experience or anything...::cough::
But, I agree that there are mature concepts in the movie, but really it's just a movie about robots! What kid wouldn't want to see that? There's always a hero and a villain in movies/cartoons/video games, so I'm sure kids are used to it these days. Hard to shield kids from anything with the advent of the lovely internet... :)
I don't even think IRONMAN looks adult friendly. RDowney as a superhero is like putting Charles Manson in the Ice Capades.
