Does the iPhone have a different connector pin-out? It doesn't seem to work on my car iPod adapter or on my home mini-stereo.

Also note that the iPhone headphone jack requires an adaptor to work with normal stereo headphones (the jack assumes headphones with a microphone).

Actually, it will work with some headphones; it depends on the size of the plug because the iPhone connector is recessed.
