I'm setting up my family room/home theater and am thinking of ways to hide the small cube speakers that I have. I can place them on stands or on brackets on the wall, however they are black and still quite visible, even if I hide the wires in the wall. I was wondering if I could actually take my cube speakers and install them IN the wall. Maybe put a paper or fabric membrane on the wall that is paintable? Any thoughts, experiences or suggestions?
Physically I can't think of a reason that you can't do that. However, you should know that a) the hole in the wall you create may create unintended reflections that make the sound worse, and b) the speakers may not have been designed for this loading which may impact frequency response some and c) be sure that the cubes don't have ports on the back that are blocked.
I tried this with standard speakers, and put fiberglass all around them to stop reflections, and I was still unhappy with the sound. Your situation may be different, of course.
Good feedback, tmartin. I did some wall investigation and it looks like the wall installation would not be an option after all. I'll install the wiring in the wall and attach the cubes to the wall. I think that will give the best sound quality.
Thanks!
...mostly it sounds better as the same speakers in front of the wall. No reflecting wall behind the spakers is able to producing a delayed wavefront. By that reason no comb filter effects arise because of the superposition.
Kind regards Helmut
