Hum from speakers when turntable is on

Hello,

When my amp is on and switched to my phone pre-amp, I hear a fairly loud hum from my speakers. In addition, when my fridge switches on (whatever it is that it is switching on and off), the noise seems to feedback into my speakers. Can this be solved with a power conditioner? My phono preamp is a Bellari tube preamp which I am told is noisy but I am not sure if it is the culprit in both these situations. Thank you.

Check your grounds. ALL your grounds both into AC and at the cartridge side.

Also check to see if any transformers or other electronics are located near the phono pre. iF so move them farther away and see if the hum changes. Is your refrige on the same circuit as your stereo? If it is change it to another line if at all possible.

Check your TT connections as well.

If it still hums after making sure none of these are the causes of the hum, teach your cartridge the words ...sorry, old audiophile joke.

I've been able to solve various hum issues in our showroom by using a "cheater" plug on the power cords.  That's one of those 3-prong to 2-prong adapters with the little pigtail for the optional ground.  Also, like Steven said above, make sure the table is on it's own circuit.  Another thing I found was an outboard power supply sitting to close to the turn table leads.

Outboard power supplies are notorious hum-producers.

When faced with a hum problems the systematic removal and repositioning of cables and components can often isolate the problem. I call this the "hum patrol" and most audiophiles have to engage in it on a regualr basis if they change equipment frequently.
