How to Upgrade from my Simaudio Attraction 7.1

an4ning@yahoo.com -- Sat, 08/22/2009 - 08:35

I am looking to move up in the processor department.  The Sim has served me well for about 5 years but has lately been malfunctioning.  On any of my digital inputs (Marantz DV9500, PS3, Apple TV), the center channel would cut out or sometimes all five channels will cut out.  It is solved by a hard repowering but it is getting quite annoying.  I also would like to be able to decode the newer audio formats such as TRUEHD from my Blue Ray Discs that I mostly watch but my first preference is SOUND QUALITY!
The Sim has good sound but I always listen through the Analog Pass through and not through their DAC.  I have upgraded my Marantz at the Upgrade Company and the improvement is way over the Sim.
I am considering the New Sim Evolution- too expensive, not much info/review, last resort
Classe SSP-800 seems very promising but I don't have much experience and still remember my Rotel (first receiver)
Cary Cinema 11 (I think it might be a step down for me in Sound Quallity)

Anyone out there with a suggestion?

I can enthusiastically endorse the Classe SSP-800 for sound quality, features, and user interface. See my recent review in The Absolute Sound.

Also consider Bryston's new processor which is due out any day now...same DAC as the BDA-1.

I did read the great review on the Classe but just wonder how much of a step up it is compared to the Simaudio in music mode and not the TrueHD and more recent technologies.

That's a good question, and one that I can't answer not having heard the Simaudio. I know that the SSP-800 is the best-sounding controller I've heard for music (and film). Simaudio, in my experience, always seems to produce outstanding products. Can you audition the Classe?
