How does $149 HD DVD Impact the Format's Prospects?

I see that even though Blu-Ray is picking up movie backing, HD DVD players are available at mass market prices. Will this help HD DVD?

I can't imagine anyone who knows the Warner is leaving HD-DVD would buy a player, at any price. Even at $150, you can buy better upconverting DVD players that will be relevant longer than HD-DVD

The upconversion being better than 1080P?

I think the price reduction may be a final act of desperation by Toshiba. Personally, I feel that even if Toshiba gave the players away for free, it would be a poor bargain to get one, unless you intend to rent all of your movies! Some pundits are suggesting that the HD-DVD format will not survive beyond the end of this year. The big problem is, that if you buy your movies, you will have invested hundreds (or even thousands) on movies that can be played only on an aging, obsolete player that can no longer be repaired or replaced.

Hello everyone! NOOB here. Quite honestly, I WAS planning on waiting until the format war was over before I jumped into HD......but Toshiba's new prices on their HD-DVD players were too attractive to resist. When the Blu-Ray players become more "finalized" and price competitive, I will buy one. As it looks today, I believe Blu-Ray will win this, but you know, I really have no problem supporting two formats. From my limited perspective, I wish we could continue to have choices from both.
