High Gain Screens

:D Hi Everyone I need some help. I just purchased a new projection screen from www.grayhawkavs.com and it is fantastic it has 6.7 in gain with no hot spoting or side angle viewing problems. It makes my last screen VuTec look like a sheet of cardboard. I have no idea how or why we all get sucked into the advertizing hipe of the major screen companies tales of how great their products are and that if you want the best you have to spend a small fortune for the higest gain product on the market. I have now found that is not true. I have purchased 4 screens in the past two years and I did what all the gurus told me, pay the price or have a bad theater image. I am here to tell you this is not true I have purchased the finest screen for almost a third the price of the major brand name screens. If you have any other information about how to improve my image even more with a new projector please let me know, That is my next purchase with the money I saved on my new screen.

Thanks
John

A gain of 6.7 is extremely high; I'd be very surprised if off-axis viewing is acceptable. I will check out this screen and let you know what I find.

As for how to improve the image from a new projector, I would normally say block as much ambient light as possible, but with a 6.7 gain, that might be less critical than usual. (Still, I recommend it anyway.) Otherwise, be sure to mount the projector so its axis is perpendicular to the plane of the screen; do not use keystone correction, which reduces apparent resolution and detail. Also, have the projector calibrated (or at least measured to make sure its grayscale and color primaries are reasonably close to what they should be).

Not to be complaining... but it seems odd that you're name is John.... your screen name is "jhawkins" AND you "bought" a screen from a company who is owned/ran by a guy named John Hawkins. If it is just a conicidence... then sorry for the post. Otherwise, why not just state that this is your product and that we should check it out. It obviously seems like a good product. Why hide it as spam?

It looks like John Hawkins is engaging in a bit of "guerilla marketing" to promote a product he sells under the guise of appearing to be a happy consumer.

I see no problem with manufacturers and dealers participating in these forums. They are a crucial part of our hobby. Richard Rives is a respected contributor to Audiogon forums, as is Grant VanderMye to the Planar Asylum. They clearly identify themselves though. This should be mandatory here too.
