Hello everyone. I am new to this forum and I hope y'all take it easy on me. I am just getting back into audio and after many hours of auditioning and input from my dealer have put this system together.
Rotel RB 1080 - amp
Conrad Johnson PV 15 - pre amp
Meridian G07 CD Player
Maggies 3.6 speakers
My budget is @ $12,000. Looking for any suggestions, input etc.
Thanks for the help.
Should be superb and give you lots of pleasure. Be sure to give the Maggies plenty of time to break in. Have you listened to any Class D amps?
The system really does sound great. I guess my biggest concern is the Rotel amp. Do you think it is powerful enough for the Maggies?
The Rotel is rated at 200Wpc into 8 ohms and reviews suggest 400-500Wpc into 4 ohms, which the Maggies are. Unless your room is unusually large this should be plenty of juice--even for the power-hungry Maggies. The 1080 seems like a terrific value in a relatively high-powered amp, and if you say the system sounds great, well, then there you go, that's what counts.
It sounds as if you are already getting good results with your Rotel, but if you are looking for an alternative a good one might be the Audio Research 300.2 (300 Wpc at 8 Ohms, or 500 Wpc at 4 Ohms).
The 300.2 is a Class D amplifier based on Tripath technology. It's hallmarks are very high levels of transparency, terrific bass pitch definition, and an elusive and highly charismatic quality I call "dynamic expressiveness." My instinct is that this amp would match synergistically with your Maggies.
Important hint: If you check out a 300.2, make sure the demo unit has been left powered up for 24-48 hours straight beforehand (this extended "warm up" period will show the amp at its best).
