Help choosing right speakers for my A/V receiver

freeze155 -- Wed, 03/15/2006 - 17:22

I need to get speakers for my 7.1 Yamaha HTR-5990 A/V receiver. I was looking into Klipsch and I also heard of Axion speakers (from Canada) (Axiomaudio.com) My budget can not exceed $2,800. I am open to any suggestions, floor standing speakers, satellites, etc. This system will be primarily used for movies (action, sci-fi) and to play my music collection directy from my PC. (via digital inputs, Toslink, etc.) Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

There are certainly a lot of good options, but speakers are the most personal selection so I'd suggest you try to check out several yourself.

For the price, I've been impressed with the:
- Wharfedale Diamond 9 system (~ $2,200)
- PSB T45 or T55 series (you'll have to check out the prices)
- Snell K7 and 300 series sub (certainly the best looking in this class)

You might start with the TPV recommended list.

Good luck!

I'll second Jim's recommendation of the PSB T-series. Definitive Technology also makes some great speakers in that price range. Also check out Paradigm; they have a long history of delivering very high value.

How much wattage is required to drive the PSB T45 speakers? Will receivers such as the NAD C715 and NAD C720Bee do the job?
