One test disk that can be very revealing is the Silicon Optix HQV Benchmark DVD version 1.4, which is billed (accurately) as a "Picture Quality Evaluation Tool for Displays, DVD Players and Video Processors."
The disc poses difficult enough challenges to make differences between one setup configuration and another stand out clearly in ways that are easy to see and assess without specialized test equipment.

P.S., A wonderful experience I've had, and wish all forum participants could somehow have, is a "guided tour" of the HQV disk as provided by video experts Scott Wilkinson (Video Editor, TPV) and Barry Willis (Custom Installation Editor, TPV). Many thanks to Scott and Barry for sharing their expertise!
Are there test discs that will help me decide which input is best on my projector?
I have Avia but I'm looking for another one
