One test disk that can be very revealing is the Silicon Optix HQV Benchmark DVD version 1.4, which is billed (accurately) as a "Picture Quality Evaluation Tool for Displays, DVD Players and Video Processors."

The disc poses difficult enough challenges to make differences between one setup configuration and another stand out clearly in ways that are easy to see and assess without specialized test equipment.
