If I get a new DVD player, I'd be unable to utilize its HDMI connection
through my non-AV preamp; I'd have to use component video to the TV, then pass the audio to my preamp. That would mean the TV does the scaling. Is this my only option, or is there a way to get the HDMI audio signal to the stereo and the HDMI video to the TV? Or, should I forget HDMI and connect my current DVD player directly to the TV (via component) hoping for the best, or connect it to an external scaler (also via component) then feed the TV an upconverted video signal?

I don't want to hijack your thread, but you present a perfect example for my question: in the case above, why would you want to run an HDMI cable at the native DVD resolution to the TV? Wouldn't an RGB cable successfully carry the entire signal (at a lesser cost), leaving you more precious HDMI inputs for other components. I guess I am asking why use HDMI for anything but a High Def signal?

Because it's digital. RGB is only analog.
