HDMI connection issus

I recently purchased a Sony 60 xbr2 and connected it to my Yamaha 2700 via HDMI connection. This worked great. along with my hdmi connection to my OPPO. I was not able to connect my 2700 to my Scientific Atlanta HD 8300 with HDMI. I ended up using component video cables. In talking with the Tweeter installer he said only the Dennon and Pioneer receivers would allow the connection. Is this true or can I make an adjsutment with my equiptment to have all HDMI connections.

I haven't seen any analog to digital converters (they would be expensive if they were available) so if the equipment accepts digital then it will be able to use HDMI.
