HDMI and audio

I have a TV that has a DVI port but not an HDMI one. So, I have to connect it to my receiver (Sony STR-DG910) via a DVI-HDMI cable.

My DVD player, HD-DVD player and Apple TV all have HDMI ports. So I use a regular HDMI-HDMI cable to connect those.

Problem is I get no audio when the components are connected via HDMI, everything is OK with the various analog connections I've tried.

Seems to me I read somewhere that receivers come in two types, those that process the audio from the HDMI and those that just pass it through to the TV, or whatever.

If that's the case, and it applies to my situation is there a way around it and/or does anybody know an affordable replacement for the 910?
